Sanctuary survey too black or white. Of course we want an orderly city (although Law and Order has been known to mean stopping “suspicious persons” who just happen to be black or Hispanic) I don’t want my city to use law enforcement personnel to track down people who have not broken the law. Do we want to live in a city where law abiding people have to show their proof of citizenship to walk the streets?? The case you cite where an innocent woman was killed by a homeless man should not be used to demonize all undocumented people. That man was a criminal and should have been arrested on that grounds. Failure of S.F. law enforcement should not be used to demonize all non-citizens.

    WHO WROTE YOUR SURVEY QUESTIONS????

Should Newport Beach Come become a Sanctuary City or become a LAW and ORDER City?

You might want to re-write so that it reads correctly

    Mr. Peotter,

I have rented a car from Hertz on a couple of occasions recently. On the first occasion in April, I had just rented the car at John Wayne Airport. I was using google maps and driving to Laguna Beach.

Being in an unfamiliar car and unfamiliar roads, and being unaware of how the newer toll roads without toll booths worked, I drove on Highway 73. I saw that it was a toll road, which was not a problem, as I thought I would be coming up on a booth to pay the toll in cash. Of course, this was not the case.

As I passed, I briefly caught a glimpse of the sign that showed the website on it, but at highway speeds, it was too quick. When I returned the car, I asked how to pay the toll, and the return agent said, “don’t worry about it, they [Hertz} will send you a bill.”

Well they sure did. A couple weeks later, they sent me a bill for $30.00 “Administrative Fee”. When I called them, they explained it was an administrative fee for passing along my billing information to The Toll Roads. Once they give them my information, I would receive a bill from The Toll Roads for my tolls. I indeed received a bill from The Toll Roads for $6.62.

I disputed the charge for $30, as they gave me no option to pay the toll without the “Administrative Fee”. I’m still waiting for the results, although I have been educated to the proper way to avoid the fee was to have gotten on thetollroads.com within 5-days and paid the tolls directly. Lesson learned.

Now for part 2. I rented a car just 3 days ago also at John Wayne, and drove over the 73 a few times, armed with the knowledge that I could get on the website (thetollroads.com) within 5 days and pay my tolls.

Today, I got on the website to pay my tolls, and it told me the car was registered to a rental company and that they would bill me for the tolls. I called Hertz, and they told be they would indeed bill be for the tolls PLUS a $4.95 daily “administrative fee”.

Now you and I both know that $4.95 is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But the principle of this underhanded, deceptive, AND UNAVOIDABLE fee is what makes my blood boil. It seems to me that this is a recipe for a Class Action law suit!!

I feel the need to make you aware of what is going on out there with these faceless, electronic toll roads you have helped set up.

Please help stop these rental car companies from robbing unsuspecting people by charging these hidden fees!

    Sincerely,

    Clay Coleman
